What is the gospel?
The word gospel literally means good news. It is the best news that exists:
- God has made you in His image. You are of value!
- All people have sinned and lack God’s presence.
- God sent His Son Jesus Christ to the earth to bear the punishment for our sins.
- Jesus died on the cross, was buried and rose from the dead.
- Through faith in Him you receive forgiveness and eternal life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What must I do?
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
- Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and your Saviour.
- Repent — turn away from your old life and turn to God.
- Be baptized by immersion.
- Receive the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.
Practical steps
- Read God’s Word! Begin with the gospel of Mark or John.
- Pray every day to God. He wants to hear you!
- Seek fellowship with other Christians.
- Be baptized.
